Tonkin bamboo cane is also called sometimes Tsinglee cane. This Tonkin bamboo-variety is usually growing upto more than 10 meters high, 2~5 centimeters thick, sometimes even upto 8 centimeters thick. Tonkin cane is a perennial grass-like plant species, which has strong climate compatibility, and also can grow in the below zero low temperature, but is best adapted to warm and moist regions. The need for some soil-nutrients is somewhat high. The soil layer must be deep, be light-textured, including high organic matter content and being a mineral rich acidic sandy soil; the elevation should be around 150~700 meters.
Huaiji County has the best geographical environment and the climate to suit Tonkin cane. Here Tonkin has most favourite growth conditions, thus the Tonkin cane here produced is straight from bottom to end, has sparse leaves, the nodes short, stem is smooth, tenacious, the elasticity strong, and not easy to be destroyed by insects, fungi and so on. It has a good reputation--“the steel bamboo”; After cleaning and drying, the Tonkin cane is of light yellow color.
Tonkin cane is superior in quality, and its contour is artistic. It is widely used in flowers planting, trees planting, gardening, and also may be used for manufacturing table, chair, bookshelf, screen, birdcage, fishing rod, chicken coop handicraft and so on. And it can be used for making apparatus as well as basket of flowers, bamboo picture, bamboo curtain, flower pot. Simultaneously it is also used in construction, and it is the superior material for high quality paper.

Tonkin cane is the best and strongest in the whole bamboo family. It is the most representative bamboo brand; therefore people also name it “the King of bamboo”.
Tonkin cane has already gained great reputation in the world market since 18th century, but during quite a long period of time, it actually was obscure about its origins. The Tonkin cane market was controlled by the merchants from Hong Kong. They had then established bamboo processing factories in Huaiji , specialized in selling the bamboo canes to Japanese merchants. The Japanese merchants repacked them, then named them as “Tonkin cane” and sold them to the European and American markets. Therefore, it is called the “Tonkin cane” in the Europe and American. But seldom buyers over the world knew about the real origin of Tonkin cane.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the American Ministry of Agriculture, in order to clarify this mystical bamboo’s origin, issued an order to thoroughly search abroad. Afterwards they discovered its source area was in China. Immediately they informed professor Moglure, from Lingnan University botany department (then in Guangzhou city), to provide an investigation report as soon as possible. Therefore in the autumn of 1925, professor Moglure, together with Professor Feng Qing, stayed more than ten days in hillsides near our city of Huaiji (now with a population of over 1 million people) and see the rural villages to inspect the Tonkin bamboo cane’s growth and its processing situation in detail .In the book "World Bamboo Research" published afterwards, professor Moglure acclaimed that the Tonkin cane was the world most beautiful bamboo and no other bamboo was able to compete with it, and it was the truly “the king of the world bamboo”.
After the above investigation, people slowly came to know better about the origin of Tonkin cane and this bamboo became the best-selling variety towards overseas markets. Since last decades that China opened up to outside world we export now directly this Tonkin to demanding foreign markets. Tonkin is controlled for its qualities on the spot in nearby pre-selected factories, and then packed and loaded in sea-containers. We arrange fumigation and dis-infection according international phyto-sanitary regulations. Then the containers can leave via our huge West-River to either Hong Kong or Shenzhen ports where it is loaded on daily scheduled boat to EU, Japan, USA etc.
